9/10 Phil Staff review, 13 September 2012
I saw these guys a coupla years ago and they were ace. I’d completely forgotten I’d seen them until I held this CD in my fat wet hand and then it all came back to me, just like that. Now you might think they can’t have been that ace as I’d have remembered but these days my memory is so shit it’s a wonder I can get myself dressed in the morning. In case you didn’t know Rangda are the unholy trinity of Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasny and Chris Corsano. So as far as supergoups go you don’t get much more super.
They make an exciting racket! Mr Bishop’s guitar flirts with the Middle East whilst Chasny’s guitar complements that rather nicely. Chris Corsano’s drums are just as insane as ever (bless him) and it does make you wonder how he does it with just 2 hands and 2 feet. (He also uses his head...x B) It’s intense psychedelic rock music which races through your mind leaving you feeling crazyheadfried. There’s a lot to take in with fast and frenetic playing which is all over the shop. Having said that it’s not a garbled mess. There are melodies to take in whilst you’re enjoying the complex playing. I like the fact these guys have come together to do this as the music they make really doesn’t really sound like anything else. They truly are the sum of their own parts.
