- Algiers by Calexico
8/10 Phil Staff review, 07 September 2012
Calexico have been knocking ‘em out for years now. They’ve been together for 22 years which in this modern day fickle music industry is a remarkable thing! I thought they’d done a good 10-15 albums but it’s only six studio albums proper apparently. The rest of their massive output have been tour albums and collaborations. It’s only after all of this time have I wondered what a Calexico is and now I know it’s a city in California. God bless the internet.
Anyway you probably know what you’re getting with Calexico these days. They make classy-sounding Americana and this is exactly that. ‘Algiers’ was recorded in New Orleans and I’m not sure if the album has much of an Orleans vibe. There are many instruments being played here and they’re expertly arranged (as you’d expect) and the songs are all strong. There’s a healthy selection of the more bouncy upbeat numbers along with some of the more sombre country moments that make you want to cry into your soup. ‘Para’ reminds me a wee bit of ‘Street Spirit’-era Radiohead...it’s a classy little number which is the stand-out track for me, though throughout the album there are many world country classics to enjoy.
