- The Hill / Mama Lemonade by Ty Segall
9/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 29 August 2012
It’s always good to see something new from Ty Segall, so it’s lucky he seems to bring out a record every month or so, constantly refining his blown out psychedelic garage-pop style to near-perfection. This new 7” on Drag City is no exception, with a huge great amped-up slice of sugar-soaked guitar pop ‘The Hill’ opening with girl singers before amping up into a scuzzed out take on some Pretty Things/Byrds-esque psychedelia. It’s superb.
Flip it and ‘Mother Lemonade’ heads down more of a swaggering Rolling Stones rock’n’roll route, but the chorus with some drifty falsetto unison backing vocals and growing walls of guitar scree that’s reminding me of The Intelligence. Just as good as the first song. This boy’s on a golden streak right now, don’t be one of those people who discovers him after the fact and then laments the fact they never saw his (totally blistering) live show.
