- Certain Circumstances by Mark Mcguire & Nate Scheible
Here we’ve got Emeralds and Inner Tube shredder Mark McGuire and Cleveland percussionist Nate Scheible teaming up to deliver five “super slowed down ambient seagull jamz, super rhythmic almost rock jamz, overloaded free jazz style blasters”, which basically means uplifting repeato guitar and grooving, upbeat drums with a touch of jazz skitter for a totally feel-good ride.
Some tracks, such as opener ‘Vehicle’, pair slinky almost Knopfler-gone-kraut guitar shapes with bouncy, fun drum grooves for a shimmering sunset beach jam, while elsewhere, such as the lengthy ‘Like A Flame Where Salt Is Sprinkled’, we’ve got shimmering tranquil watery guitar drones and playful free drum patter that sets you adrift on seas of nostalgic dinks and squeaks and rumbles that later settles into an evocative wash of delay-soaked chordwork, simple melodic refrains and carefree hi-hat grooving, while the delay fun goes out in a more Black Eagle Child/Dustin Wong kind of direction on closer ‘Would I Could Fly’ with the smooth echo-laden licks tumbling over one another to a jazzy Tortoise-esque summer groove with neat little snare flourishes. This collection easily lives up to my hopes and ultimately it’s two skilled musicians at the top of their game having fun and making music that makes you feel good. Heartily recommended.
