As the title suggests, For My Parents sees Mono tracing their roots, and I think this important for a band that previously gave no indication of their Japanese heritage. Even as someone of Asian descent myself, if I only looked at their album sleeves and listened to the music, I would not guess Mono even had any Eastern heritage, let alone Japanese. But from the beginning, For My Parents has a distinctly Eastern and Japanese feel. Not their previous albums lacked originality, not the band were never true to themselves, it's just that they are expressing a different side of themselves here, as they have continually done.
