- Pyramid Lake / Black Ink by Airhead
Airhead returns with another slice for R&S and this time around he’s mixing in up! Not to be easily pigeonholed, the tracks on this impressive li’l 12” take a completely different course to that of the ‘Wait’ 10” from back in March. Gone are the ethereal guitars and chill-wave undertones that placed ‘Wait’ close to folktronica territory. Instead we get sharp as fuck beat programming and variations on straight up beeass music.
A-side ‘Pyramid Lake’ kicks off with the kind of sample manipulation that’ll make ya proud boi, mashing soulful synths, vocal harmonies and crunching bass into the brooding mid-paced dub groove that skitters and stumbles like a lad that’s overdone it on the dancefloor with booze pills.
Flip it and ‘Black Ink’ gets wilder! A clumsy, kinda crass circus-dub melody kicks things off and leaves me worried for a second but before you know it Airhead is splashing the percussive tones into the mix and kicking it Lone ‘Galaxy Garden’ via the Richard D. James Beatblender (TM). There’s barely a melody here but when it comes he surprises with distant soft pads coated in space echo...good lad. Can’t emphasise how all-over-the-shop the programming is here. Gotta be impressed he can keep this one coherent in the haze of sample-adelic chaos. Excellent stuff.
