The excellent Icasea label go from strength to strength as they unleash arguably their finest release yet. Scald Rougish is yet another alias from Chris Douglas (Dalglish, OST, etc.). This double cassette pack features two projects, Auen Ansici and Bardachd, which are presented in an old-skool-style tape pack which is available with five different inserts and hand numbered in an edition of a mere 50 copies, of which we are very fortunate to have scored a small handful so act fast! It also comes with a digital download and ace generative artwork by by Satoshi Aizawa.

Let's cut the bullshit and get straight to the point - this is a staggering piece of work but frankly I expect nothing less from an artist as unique as Chris Douglas. What's particularly refreshing about Auen Ansici is that in a climate where most electronic music seems to be looking to the past and reinventing it for these times, this reaches forward in a way that's almost beyond the future. It's important for electronic music to keep pushing forward and this does so in droves. But it's not all just techno wizardry for the sake of being clever or cutting edge; Douglas has an astonishing ability with his tools no question but more importantly he has vision and a rare ability to transport the listener into another world entirely through his audio. At times it's creepy at others profoundly moving. Honestly there are moments of such beauty on Bardachd I was nearly reduced to tears. Incidentally that particular work was recorded back in 2001 and thought to have been lost. It has now been remastered for this release from the original tape.

To begin to attempt to dissect the work and articulate what I hear is beyond my writing capabilities and more than likely to just make me sound like a twat so I will spare the excessive adjectives (plus I'm writing this on my phone on the way to a camping trip and my finger will fall off). If you care about proper electronic music that’s bursting with soul and creativity then get on the case. One of the finest things I've heard so far this year. If like me you've been following Chris's work over the years then you'll not be disappointed. Or if you just recently discovered the artist through his critically acclaimed Dalglish CD then the same applies.

Should you miss out on grabbing a physical copy then do head over to the Chris's Bandcamp site to grab a digital download of this release as I really can't recommend it enough. There are also tons of excellent free mixes and other sonic candy to investigate. Highest possible recommendation.
