- That's Just Fine / I'm Gonna Cross The River Of Jordan by Spacemen 3 / Sun Araw
I’m not certain anybody needs to review this because a Spacemen 3/Sun Araw split 7” on Great Pop Supplement is really going to sell itself, isn’t it? I mean surely you already know this is going to be amazing. Over the course of 17 33rpm minutes there’s a rare vocal take of Spacemen 3’s deep cut ‘That’s Just Fine’, with hypnotic twinkles, buried fuzz and mumbly almost Suicidey vocals swishing around underneath. Totally blissy stuff.
Flip it and Cameron ‘Sun Araw’ Stallones drops his nine-minute weirdo take on traditional cut ‘I’m Gonna Cross That River of Jordan’, with pulsing industrial two-note synth throb and rumble overlaid by the kind of blown out plasticky guitar tones that made the Inner Tube LP earlier this year such a delight. The vocals, when they come in, are blurred and dubbed into a wash of ethereal clamouring that makes for a listen which is both chaotic and drifty. With the two note synth drone underpinning everything Stallones has the freedom to just wig out, cheekily stumbling around the gospel staple with an irreverent freewheeling dub-noise vigour. It’s more layered, fuzzy and full-on than anything else I’ve heard from him lately.
Both tracks are blissed out bong-swayers and there’s so much music on this 7” that you’re really getting a bargain. Plus you don’t need me to tell you that these’ll go fast. You snooze you lose, get it now or regret it forever, etc. The 50-50 red and clear vinyl looks good enough to eat too.
