The opening track on this debut album ‘The Garden’ is immediately impressive and recalls a Warpaint raised solely on The Slits and The Raincoats. Production wise it’s soft, subtle and supple but the song structures are complex with chanted vocals, swiftly shifting tempo and chord changes. ‘Shut Eye’s’ folky melody recalls Tunng while ‘Re-arrange’ raises the bar further and provides a much needed oomph to the proceedings. It is based around a lovely wandering melody which hits those kind of chord changes that make your tummy go all funny and remind me of all manner of post-punk dreamers, an obscure but apt choice would be the gorgeous shimmery folk of early ‘80’s Athens GA dreamers Oh Ok and Limbo District.

I can babble on about obscure folky wanderers as much as I like but the real impressive thing is that it has plenty of real pop stompers. This ain’t no CocoRosie style folly. ‘Genevieve’ blasts along with a timeless melody recalling The Coral and Crosby, Stills and Nash yet elsewhere there are several tangled, fiddly Pentangle-like moments striking the right balance between folk- ish introspection and all out pop attack . Impressive throughout, this is highly recommended and if that isn’t enough for you to part with your cash initial copies come with an ace bonus CD mix expertly crafted by&the band with top notch stuff by Love, Captain Beefheart and Can are just some of the treats on offer.

Great album by a great group! You can still buy their limited edition EP ‘I Am The Rain’ on 7” on the Idle Fret website: http://www.idlefret.com none of the 4 tracks are on the album and they usually close their show with the lead track. It’s brilliant!
