Half Cousin is the work of Orkney resident Kevin Cormack. Cormack is obsessed with his home town, taking a mildly voyeuristic approach to documenting the place and the characters that reside there.

Musically Cormack crafts a purest type of pop that is as much influenced by classical pop sounds as it is the kraut-rocking lads like Can or the psychedelic ramblings of Captain Beefheart. Arrangements are quirky without being overbearing, melodies are strong without verging into irritatingly hummable territory and the instrumentation keeps the listener on their toes. I like his subtle use of synths and pre-programmable drum machines, it really brings out the best in these well formed pieces with tracks running the gamut from spacial, ghostly pop to all out big band arrangements and ambitious concert hall filling epics.

‘Fantasy Belt’ is a pretty adventurous affair that is certainly worth a little look, especially if you’re a fan of quirky pop outings ala The Kicks, early Pink Floyd and perhaps even dEUS.
