Christ, this is a most unusual release. The spoken word elements of this experimental set were recorded around a decade ago whilst at legendary philosopher, intellectual and writer Wilson's house in Cornwall, this CD supposedly serving as an "audio portrait" of the life of a fascinatingly profound man. It is what former Jack/Jacques honcho Reynolds has added to the oral snippets that makes for a truly beguiling listen. Wilson was interested, like many of us, in dark psychological subject matter and empathised with "the Outsider" - the title of his début tome.

The grainy musique concrète/collage, drones, rustles, field recordings, dark astral squiggles, the unnerving grimaces of outsider sound art, the dinky melancholic tinkles of piano and intriguing sonic dustings he splashes and smears all over this collection are quite excellent, probably more interesting than seventy percent of the drone/sound art things we get sent but possibly more scattershot, random and unfocused on a settled sonic palette.

The actual real headfuck comes with the sprightly cerebral funk work-out of ' The Colour And Light Around Me', the penultimate piece! It's a deep, tripped-out tune that begins quite pensively with Colin (for we shall pretend he's our friend now) ruminating on the lead up to his first publication before exploding into the slinky foot workout you weren't expecting any time soon. The finale is another poppy track with a melody-rich outlook - a vintage bontempi organ and bass-led thing with a really cute minimal guitar riff. It kind of sounds like if some kids spliced Quickspace and David Holmes together with a well spoken chap muttering about classic poets draped amusingly over the top...curious CD of the week and since I’d not really followed up the name before but I'm now driven to find out more about Mr. Wilson.
