REVIEWS
Given the name and the fact that the DVD case this CD comes in looks like an aged spaghetti western cover, I initially thought that this CD was going to be in thrall to prolific film composer genius Ennio Morricone, but while his influence is evident in places the recordings contained on here owe as much to the modern drifty ambient types like Coppice Halifax or bvdub, with all the recordings being swathed in warm synth drones and the instruments blurred and processed.
You can still pick out the soft tinkling guitars and occasional trumpet and vocals, and it’s a very harmonious, melodic listen, with tracks like ‘Once Upon A Time’ even venturing into some kind of warm brassy trip-hopesque territory. It’s sort of reminding me of a modern post-dub/ambient take on the summer holiday sass of top ‘90s production team Morcheeba, which probably doesn’t sound like a fashionable comparison but it’s pretty amazing how much stuff seems to owe a debt to their liquidy pop grooves nowadays. And speaking of liquidy grooves it’s reminding me of Balam Acab and Peaking Lights in places too.
Basically what we’re talking here is a smooth, sensous bit of post-dub, post-driftstep, post-ambient, post-techno, post-pop that’ll bliss up your mind-grapes. Everything I’ve heard lately on Wil-Ru has been really different and enjoyable and this is no exception.
