I’ve just been trying to get my head around the head-scratching newie from The North Sea so it’s nice to have a pop single to review now! On ‘Need It’ this London-based quartet have quite a thick, bold sound that’s built out of shoegazey guitar fuzz and dreamy-yet-confident vocals combined with a really bright, simple synth melody. Totally feel-good stuff, it’s the kind of technicolour fuzz-pop you’d expect to make a dent in the bottom end of the top 40 back in the late ‘90s.

Flip it and we’ve got a Pixies-a-like track called ‘Headspins’, which you will like if you like the Pixies because it sounds an awful lot like the Pixies. Restrained rhythms, slinky cyclic Deal-a-like basslines, tasty guitar tones, a falsetto-vocalled chorus doused in fuzz...I might actually like this song more than the A side but I can see how it couldn’t be the lead track given its brazen similarity to Black and co. But who cares about that if it sounds good anyway?
