Trash-pop doyens Sophomore Lounge’s last outing, the debut 7” from Tropical Trash, totally popped my skull so it’s nice to see we’ve got some more stuff in from them this week. Chicago’s The Christmas Bride started out as a silly side-project for frontman Davey Hart of Wishgift(?) until it started getting good and he started taking it seriously and now it’s a proper band that plays goofy songs about fictional characters and sexy times. What comes out is a mix of glam rock, NOFX-esque knowingly dumbass pop, and minimal post-punk.

It’s got the same kind of exuberant silliness that I like about bands like Hunx and his Punx or even Dope Body - throwing themselves into their comically lowbrow concept with a zeal and wit that makes them very hard not to enjoy. It’s like the Buzzcocks playing Glitter Band songs, naughty and obnoxious and catchy and ultimately lots of fun.
