- Nothing Here Now But These Recordings: ‘78-’79 by Karen Novotny X

Karen Novotny X were a trio based in Hackney in the late ‘70s, where they took advantage of everyone else being distracted by the neanderthal punk devolution by locking themselves down and making progressive, minimal synthpop with loads of busy, loopy weirdness. Listening to it now it sounds incredibly modern - rare pop moment ‘Munich Melodie’ in particular has a glacial but pumping techno beat with subtly morphing throbs and whooshes and deadpan vocals and sounds like it could’ve been made yesterday, but that’s as conventional as the tunes come on this collection comes really.
Much of the time they’re walking a peculiar path along the border between experimental minimal noise and disco, with consistently baffling and enthralling results - a dense, repetitive soup of pure synth tones, understated vocals and clinical drum machine beats which is not only authentic but still stands up to scrutiny 35 years on! Super stuff.
