- Zombi 2 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters) by Fabio Frizzi

I’ve never seen Lucio Fulci’s Italian horror classic Zombie Flesh Eaters before (also known as Zombie, Zombi 2, Island of the Living Dead, Zombie Island and Woodoo), mainly due to the UK’s ultra-conservative censorship of the ‘70s/’80s. I should track it down as it sounds like an absolute classic, high in gore fun and featuring a zombie fighting a shark!! Sounds awesome.
Death Waltz Recording Co. are a new label specialising in soundtrack reissues. Today we got this and John Carpenter’s ‘Escape From New York’ soundtrack so I’m pretty made up. Zombie Flesh Eaters is scored by Italian composer Fabio Frizzi is probably consider his best work - it’s certainly his most popular and on a par with anything big horror hitters like Goblin or John Carpenter have ever produced.
A wide variety of styles are covered here from the ridiculous faux Hawaiian jam that opens the LP to the more blood curdling incidental synthscapes and voodoo grooves that follow. ‘Sequence. 2’ is a fantastic piece in the cosmic horror synth vein but the tribal rhythms of ‘Sequence. 3’ and ‘Sequence. 4’ are the pieces that stand out as being unique within the field of Italian horror soundtracks. They sound fresh as a daisy.
This album is the real deal. Totally amazing synth work, totally outstanding sense of drama and comedy combined plus it includes sleeve art by legendary UK poster artist Graham Humphreys (Evil Dead, Nightmare On Elm Street 1-5 and Return Of The Living Dead), an A2 poster and sleeve notes by Italian horror expert Stephen Thrower. A must own item methinks. Can’t wait to see the film.
