So it’s looks like I’m the new Ant. I show a little interest in dance music and suddenly I’m lumbered with the weeks totally obscure 12” cuts by artists I have no knowledge off passed on to me by a ReviewBot that seems incapable of assessing music made by his own kind...machines.
So, Der Zyklus is the work of Heinrich Mueller (not the Nazi war criminal mind but another guy). This 12” is his first new material in 3/4 years and it’s a pretty minimalist affair. Side A’s cut is constructed from what sounds like a modular synth sequence that bounces along with rhythmic regularity unassisted by conventional beats and instead driven by the momentum of tap delay. It’s a weirdly enjoyable, semi-industrial electronic throwback made with nerdy precision.
Flip it and the B side is on a classic tip with a minimalist bass line of the Carpenter persuasion guiding this cryptic, spooky synth jam. Then we have a final, even spookier affair to finish. This one relies on another impressive, beat free arpeggio groove augmented by synth sways and stabs coming from all angles. Total soundtrack fodder. Mad decent.
