9/10 Andrew Hickford Customer review, 8th May 2014
Country music can sometimes be a bit of a hard sell, particularly in this country where we dont share that culture of wide open spaces, rednecks and hoe downs to the extent of the US where country music fits so snugly into the core of that mythical good ole america (for some at least). However, for music lovers, it really is worth dumping some assumptions (that is to say I've had to) and having a dip into this genre. Admittedly I know little about country, so if I am to invest my cash I'll take the hand of an expert, in this case the ever excellent Light In The Attic. There are a couple of tracks on this LP that veer to close to what I'd class as more straight up country, however there is gold to be found. Stand out tracks for me are Bobbi Gentry with Man, He made a Woman Out of Me which as well as having a nice funky element to it is also borderline filthy. To be honest this is worth having for that track alone. If you need more then I'd head to Piledriver by Dennis The Fox. This is a beaut of a track, a great tale told in the lyrics (a bad woman) with a thundering break 3/4 of the way in. If you dig this then I'd also suggest tracking down the Soul Jazz comps Delta Swamp Rock Volumes 1 & 2.
