Lots of 7”s this week but this must surely be one of the best. Opener ‘Celine’ is a kind of Shangaan Electro mashed up with Washed Out blast of lopsided summer sample pop. BUT it’s track two which has really washed my womble.
‘Usher in Spring’ has a naggingly familar intro sample - no idea where it’s from but it’s doing our collective heads in. It’s soon joined by a chorus of interlocking vocals creating a quite heavenly loop of sounds but it gets even better than that! Thumping beats burst in and even more scattershot voices come in and out of the mix. It’s hugely impressive. You could compare this stuff to Hype Williams and the like but this has much more surefooted pop grounding.
We were debating whether the record could get any better and ‘The Premises’ almost manages it, this time there’s a male voice in attendance and it uses the whole Toro Y Moi ‘80s Hall and Oates thing but this time with added male and female twisting vocal melodies.
To close, ‘I Hate Him’ is more of a banger, four to the floor kick drums dominate the track and there’s that Animal Collective ethnicy vibe but even though they leave you aching they eventually burst into a super chorus of voices and bass. This record takes influence from quite recent and obvious sources but it takes it in a whole new direction and impressively they have the pop. A wonderful 7” and these will be popular. I DEMAND IT!
