Complete Spiral EP by DJ Sprinkles & Mark Fell

9/10 Li'l Biz 12 June 2012

Liking this one. DJ Sprinkles a.k.a Terre Thaemlitz (‘Midtown 120 Blues’) and Yorkshire lad Mark Fell (of SND) indulge their shared love of late ‘80s/early ‘90s NYC House with ‘Say It Slowly’, an almost perfectly sculpted minimalist club anthem from another time. We’re talking super stripped back house with an almost inaudible sub-bassline, a super deep kick drum and a naggingly catchy organ line accompanied by a cut up vocal courtesy of Arthur Scargill, of all people.

The ‘Hee Haw’ remix replaces Scargill with a more traditional combination of coos and gasps cut and delayed to sit in the mix old school style. It takes nothing away from the track but you gotta love that Scargill rant.

But wait, there’s more. Flip it and we get the main attraction - ‘Complete Spiral’ - a beast of a tune!! Over twelve or so minutes they weave a complex tapestry of light poly-rhythmic percussion, delicate bass grooves and uber-tasteful synth stabs that’ll have you feeling tripled chilled in no time. It’s the joyous sophistication of the rhythmic interplay that makes this such a stunning, must-own track. A fantastic outing from the lads.
