10/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 18th October 2014
This collection contains Neil Young's first four solo albums following the demise of Buffalo Springfield. Whilst his self titled debut is fairly average, the other three, "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", "After The Goldrush" and "Harvest" are essential. "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is where Neil Young hit his stride. "Cinnamon Girl" clocks in under 3 minutes with it's memorable riff and psychedelic melody. Of the Longer songs, "Down By The River" is notable for its bloody-minded one note guitar solo and "Cowgirl In the Sand" is just a dusty ten minutes to lie back and close your eyes to. I have reviewed "After The Goldrush" separately on here, so won't go into that. "Harvest" contains Neil Young's biggest hit, "Heart Of Gold" Which reached No.10 in the UK charts. Despite it being his most commercially popular album, one could also argue that it's his best. "Out On The Weekend", "Old Man", "The Needle And The Damage Done" and the title track show a songwriter at the absolute peak of his powers. If you don't own these albums already, then this is pretty good way to get a hefty dose of Neil Young at his best.
