8/10 Clinton Staff review, 31 May 2012

One-man psych-folk slo-core bliss-popper teams up again with Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, etc...do you need telling?) in MGMT’s laboratory to create two slabs of slow rolling, ethereal Cosmic English Music. On the A side ‘Couldn’t Do’ starts life as a one-chord Velvet Underground around the campfire singalong, slowly adding all kinds of heavily reverbed ephemera until the whole thing explodes into a mantra-ish drone of seismic proportions that will have any listener spellbound regardless of intake of legal or illegal substances.

On the flip we get a cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘As Tears Go By’ which slows it down almost to a stop creating a hazy, lazily spun churn of acoustic guitar, organ and very s...l.....o.....w  vocals. A perfect lullaby to drift off to sleep to on a warm afternoon. Good stuff all round but the A side here bodes exceptionally well for the upcoming full length album from which it’s taken. Insanely limited, lots of digital extras and sure to be in demand so you’d better move quick.
