9/10 Brian Staff review, 01 June 2012

I told Phil I’d seen this film the other week, Meek’s Cutoff, and that landed me with the unenviable job of trying to write some sensible, constructive words about the lovely vinyl issue of its OST. Well, Kelly Reichardt, if you’re not already familiar with her fine body of work, makes super-slow, intimate and absorbing independent American films that have common themes of wanderlust, the fragilities of human bonds and animal life/love, loss , fear and quiet redemption. Proper bittersweet, gentle films that explore our entwining lives, set against stunning naturalistic backdrops with spare, engrossing soundtracks such as this. A ten-inch on Blankest Ringblow with the soundtrack to her fine Western Meek’s Cutoff that you  really should watch. Comprising of dusty shimmering drones; pendulous and watery prepared piano thunks; haunting tendrils of Cave/Ellis-style post-rock strings and bags’n’ bags of widescreen atmosphere…..it’s a truly tasty record is this that truly reflects the desolate beauty of the film. Kudos to Joe B for bagging the rights to this beauty……ace sleeve too goddammit!
