The Olympics are coming, as is Euro 2012, so there's bound to be lots of weepy TV montages of athletes who have fallen over, come last in the race or football teams who have lost in the quarter-finals after a dramatic but futile penalty shoot out. The BBC could do worse than use large swathes of this CD as the tear-inducing background music.

It's all heartbroken pianos, evocative synth washes, crestfallen melodies that head skyward as that bronze medal becomes a distant dream. Think Sigur Ros as played by Blue States or Explosions in the Sky re-interpreted by Craig Armstrong. The dynamics are strictly post-rock, slowly building melodies, but the production is more electronica-glitch with scattershot beats, shards of violin samples and some weird found sound type stuff that adds some much needed salt to the saccharine melodies. The album has a very synthetic feel as if produced on laptop, sometimes overly twinkly but often quite affecting.
