- Thunder May have Ruined The Moment by Vieo Abiungo & Peter Monro
9/10 Phil Staff review, 23 May 2012
I think I know what these guys are on about. There's at least two or three times in my life when thunder has ruined the moment but I'm not sure if it's the same sort of thunder. This is essentially a new album by William Ryan Fritch, aka Vieo Abiungo, aided and abetted by Peter Monro who has made some experimental films for the DVD. This version with the CD, DVD and accompanying sexy booklet is ltd to 300 copies in an oversized hardback sleeve type thing.
Mr Fritch weaves together neoclassical (there's a heavy dose of tinklyness on this album), folk and beats in a rather unusual yet engaging fashion. Some of the songs take a cyclical Philip Glass approach albeit with more going on. The strings are lush and evocative, the beats are simple and purposeful and surrounded by some wonderfully rich instrumentation and percussion. This guy is making high quality music and more of you out there need to check it out. It's utterly delightful music and one I give my fullest recommendation to. I'm sat here with my phone on my lap trying to make myself impotent...I'm not sure if it's working or not but this is soundtracking it very nicely.
