8/10 Mike Staff review, 23 May 2012

Well, this lad is certainly ticking all the zeitgeist buttons with this name, isn't he? Is that some kind of joke? The last record I reviewed certainly seemed to be. Thankfully, though, the funniest thing about this record is the artist's name, and on the (green) wax itself he's knocking out a succession of lo-fi indie pop ditties from gentle fingerpicked numbers to noiser fuzz-pop type vibes. 'Crystal Lipsss' has got a piano too, which is gradually joined by squalling guitar noise to good effect.

The vocals are delivered in a Woods-esque falsetto which is overall very pleasant and unintrusive, and the tones are well captured, but sometimes he does drift into fairly anonymous twee dreampop territory. None of it's annoying me, I'm just not sure how much of it I'll remember tomorrow, if you know what I mean? Still, it's competent at worst and there's some really beautiful moments for those willing to take a little time out of their day to look for them. My highlight is the wonky doomy lo-fi slow-burner 'Burning Kingdom', but that could be because it's an instance of not feeling like I've heard this before. Comes with a download which includes a remix of the entire album by American band The New Slave (no, me neither).
