- Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore by Mark Leckey
8/10 Brian Staff review, 24 May 2012
Now here we have another interesting release in a week of such things. Well in my pile anyway there's been nothing that's failed to raise an eyebrow somewhere along the line. Released on a Mancunian boutique imprint, this is the soundtrack to a pre-millennial video installation by sound/visual artist Mark Leckey and it's a remarkable splice-tastic listen that spans three generations of dancefloor culture stretching back to the heyday of '70s Northern Soul onto '80s casual culture and the hedonistic decade that shook the establishment.
Everything from police sirens to murky slices of classic acid house, snippets of dialogue from across the eras, old manipulated synthesizer cycles, disembodied radio jingles, hauntological curios and terrace chants...this blurred, intriguing listen kind of lands somewhere between The KLF's Chill Out and an E'd-up Nurse With Wound. For fans of classic rave, British counter-culture, Billy Burroughs and the fine lines of tape loop manipulation which here results in a platter forged from fiercely dedicated sound collage and masses of passionately constructed found sound...Curious stuff and there's no repress on this 500 edition by all accounts.
