8/10 Mike Staff review, 23 May 2012
Richard Chartier, Archduke of Chinstrokington, has got a new album out. What's more, it's on his brand new 'Line [Segments]' imprint, designed to put out music which is allied to his Line label but doesn't quite fit into their studious and highbrow aesthetic.
Anyway, what that means for this CD is some finely detailed and relaxing drones, with occasional samples, making for a rather absorbing and relaxing 70 minutes of detached stillness. It's clear from the press release that he considers this to be among his more playful work, but I think that really just means it's less academic and more personal than his other work because I'm not finding it particularly funny. It's sort of reminding me of Nurse With Wound's driftier moments a little; minimal, spooky, intermittently tense sound constructions for the patient late night listener.
