7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 4th June 2015

North Hills is the debut album by laid-back country rockers, Dawes. Heartfelt lyrics, beautiful melodies and gorgeous harmonies fill the album. Fans of Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Poco and The Eagles will find plenty to like here. “That Western Skyline” and the late ‘70s Neil Young-ish “When You Call My Name” stand out but pale in comparison to the beautiful “Give Me Time”, probably the album’s best track. “When My Time Comes” stands out for being more punchy and up-tempo than most of the album. “If You Let Me Be Your Anchor” has completely wonderful harmonies that recall Crosby, Stills & Nash. There are better examples of alt. country, or whichever pigeonhole you’d like to put this in, such as Whiskeytown’s “Strangers Almanac” but this is worth a punt.
