8/10 Mike Staff review, 31 May 2012

Coco Rosie are back with a new single ‘We Are On Fire’, which is not a version of ‘90s dance-metal chancers Sona Fariq’s ‘We Be On Fire’ but in fact a brand new single from the weird-pop duo full of watery grooves and distant vocals. It kind of seems like they’ve listened to Burial and decided to move their sound more into that drifty, watery direction. The nasal, processed vocals totally remind me of a female Yoni Wolf sometimes too! It also still sounds quite a lot like Coco Rosie.

I’m actually enjoying the B side the most on this seven, though. It’s not quite as modern-sounding, which means it’s cleaner and less drifty and the beats are crisper, which I think better suits their aesthetic...this kinda pixie-pop business doesn’t need watering down any more, does it? There’s some weird vocal loops and ‘90s-style twitchy electronic beats on this track and it’s more closely recalling their earlier stuff than the fairly unremarkable A side. Apparently Antony Hegarty's helping out with the vocals too! I like this one a lot actually - should’ve been the lead track if you ask me!
