- Secret Rituals by Terror Bird
8/10 Mike Staff review, 15 May 2012
Terror Bird are back with some more of their gothy synthpop, this time on Adagio830. They've been doing this for a while now and this seems like their most confident outing yet, with the vocals even soaring to Zola Jesus-esque heights on the likes of 'Waiting For Nothing'. In fact the similarities to ZJ are pretty unavoidable through a lot of these tracks, but there's worse things to sound like, I'm sure you'll agree. If not, uh, we've got some other records you might like? The Kills are also springing to mind in places, but not shying away from the Blondie-esque classic pop crooning.
The arrangements are quite minimal and spacious, generally just drum machines and a couple of synths, so it's got a bit of lo-fi charm but the songs are still quite sweeping and catchy, even radio friendly in places. If you're getting impatient for a new Zola Jesus record this should tide you over in the meantime. Really charming '80s-inspired lo-fi post-punk synthpop.
