Looks like it's synthpop corner for me this morning. First the new Terror Bird LP, now this one from Newclear Waves. I'm not too sure about that band name...it reminds me of that Ash record 'Nu-Clear Sounds', and who wants to be reminded of that? Thankfully all thoughts of those indie pop scamps vanish when you put the needle on the record and discover that this is in fact a metronomically paced techno-inflected slice of deadpan and monotonous indiepop with distant, processed vocals which maintains a murky malevolence despite the brightness and clarity of the synth tones employed, giving off vibes that make me think this must be what it'd sound like if Dirty Beaches made a synthpop record.
I'm really liking it, to be honest, the tones aren't too busy but they're wonderfully constructed and make for a langorously indulgent listen, even making me think of Kraftwerk in places, but maybe crossed with synthy post-punky TPk offshoot Horrid Red. Also brings to mind a spooked-out late night take on Total Control's sinewy post-punk stylings. I'm not sure how either of those could be a bad thing. The sleeve is a totally sweet fancy die cut thing, too. A treat for both the eyes and ears.
