6/10 Clinton Staff review, 01 June 2012

This is the solo album from the guitarist from the ridiculously prolific Fresh and Only’s. Opener ‘Strange Desire’ sounds exactly like David Bowie’s ‘China Girl’ whilst ‘Singing the Ending’  apes note for note The Go Between’s beautiful ‘Quiet Heart’. Both would be great songs if they didn’t so obviously sound like something that has come before.  The album has the lush 80’s style production that saw Echo and the Bunnymen through numerous lauded albums. ‘Run Like the Hunted’’ would have fitted pretty well on a soundtrack to a mid 80’s John Hughes movie sounding a little Psychedelic Furs here, a little Simple Minds there. ‘Youth’s Lonely Wilderness’ tones down the stadium a little bit  - there are bits of good melodies here and there  and the plagent production is nice but this album comes across as an enjoyable labour of love for the artist rather than anything outright special.
