“Tuscon: A Country Rock Opera” by an expanded version of Giant Sand known as Giant Giant Sand is a lovely record and it seem to have already been forgotten about by the world. For such a big and ambitious record this is a bit sad but that’s the way Giant Sand have always operated, behind the scenes. This album has a more in common with Calexico than other Giant Sand records, despite there being less musical involvement this time from Joey Burns and John Convertino. There is more mariachi brass, more Tex-Mex sounds; “Forever and a Day” is a good example. There is a lot to digest from this 19-track concept album but the notable highlights are “Out Of The Blue”, “We Don’t Play Tonight” and “The Sun Belongs to You”.
