Very impressive mix of neoclassical and electronic textures here from the mercurial and mysterious Chapelier Fou. Apparently this is an old EP which has only before appeared on CD, and now it's got a tasty pink vinyl pressing. There's a tasty seven tracks on here which mix warm, organic orchestral textures with a variety of melodic electronics - I'm hearing touches of Boards of Canada, Plaid and even Madlib at various points - for a detailed, indulgently enjoyable listening experience.

When a bright, punchy synth line takes centre stage in 'Animaux Flexibles' over soft melodic tinkles and washes and stuttering, head-nodding beats it's hard not to get swept along in the whole thing, and then he sweeps you from that sci-fi wasteland into some kind of pastoral European wonderland with the wibbly guitars and sweeping strings of 'Doodling Hands' sounding like a more optimistic take on the Hood/Epic 45 kind of sound, although I guess those comparisons are inevitable if you're doing this kind of lush melodic electro-acoustic business, but then on closer 'Postlude' he's throwing baroque strings over detailed twinkly electronics that are bringing to mind Plaid's 'Tekkon Kinkreet' OST.

I'm impressed with the amount of detail and energy he can pack into these songs without diluting the simplicity and effectiveness of the tunes. It's only an EP but it's reasonably lengthy and there's certainly an LP's worth of ideas on here. Totally worth investigating if you like detailed soundtracky melodic stuff.
