- Ruins by David Newlyn
8/10 Phil Staff review, 16 May 2012
Everytime I saw this CD I thought it was the new Ruins CD and I'd say to myself “Oh, Ruins have a new CD out' (as it just says 'Ruins' on the front of it). Then I'd pick it up and realise it was by David Newlyn and think to myself, “Oh I was wrong, I wonder what's like.” The sad thing is that it happened at least three times proving that I unlike many others don't learn from my mistakes. Anyway David Newlyn runs the October Man label and he's been making ambient/neoclassical/pleasing ear music for about six years now (on labels such as Boltfish, Symbolic Interaction, Mobeer, Tokyo Droning, U-Cover, Time Released Sound and Cotton Goods to name some of 'em). This CD comprises two 20ish-minute-long tracks which are ambitious pieces!
Here he mixes up neoclassical, field recordings, electronics and guitars to make some varied sounding yet beautiful pieces of music. I really like the minimal use of tinkly electronics in the background as they pop up and then fade out before they pop up and errr...fade out again. It's kinda maudlin as there's lots of misery strings in there tugging at you throughout the album all doused in lovely lovely ambience. Moving stuff I'm sure you'll agree. Oh, and this is part of the Chocolate box series on Time Released Sound (series of 6 CDs) which sound well promising!
