My first impression of this record is that it’s massively in debt to French soft-pop maestros Air. Soft synths, soft guitars, soft drums, soft vocals. It’s very pleasant. It also reminds me a little of ‘90s coffee table pop bods Morcheeba, I think it’s that warm bass tone coupled with the patiently shimmering synths and slow-picked guitar melody. It’s proper silky, summery stuff anyway, relaxing and unintrusive but maybe a little anonymous.
The second song is a slightly more upbeat take on the same themes, then if you flip it ‘Light Of A Darkness’ heads into whispered dreampop territory like My Bloody Valentine playing as quietly as they possibly can. It’s quite atmospheric and probably my highlight of the platter. Closer ‘King & Barnes’ also sounds like a slo-core take on some shoegazey melodies and is very drifty and pleasant. An admirable EP with lots of sweet tones, but it can often drift into the background and could use a few more irresistible hooks to keep your attention really. Certainly won’t offend anybody though.
