Nature and culture website Caught By The River have put out this weird split 7”. On the A Side “The Dubwood Allstars” are doing 'Under Dubwood'. The concept is simple, the execution perfectly acceptable. Basically they've just taken a King Tubby dub groove and put Richard Burton's iconic reading of Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milk Wood' over the top. The pastoral Englishness blends with the loose, sunny Jamaican vibes in an entirely pleasant and enjoyable way and as far as novelty singles go this could be much, much worse. Flip it and there's a Time and Space Machine 'River Theme' “reconstruction”. Honestly this is a very confusing record, although the fact that it's very hard to figure out what the fuck's going on does give it a certain mystique, I suppose. Basically the TASM side is early-'70s-sounding garage-psych-pop. I'm not sure what it's reconstructing or who it's reconstructed by because it just sounds like a regular song to me but it's a good bit of grooving retro psych that'll make all you Fruits De Mer types happy. Two very different, entirely listenable and fairly mysterious cuts - one a weird novelty dub-poetry mashup, one a well-observed slice of retro psych-pop.

10/10 Elizabeth Customer review, 13th March 2014

I think Under Dubwood is one of the best and most exciting things I have heard for a long time. It is uncanny how the combination of Richard Burton's broody voice, Dylan Thomas's evocative words, and King Tubby's crazy soundmix all work together! The whole is actually greater than the sum of its brilliant parts! I feel like I've been invited to a private conversation between the three of them at a dark dank groovy cofffee bar in the '60's - I can actually hear the cigarette and spliff smoke curling up around the dim lights. I'm so glad that the Caught By The River posse got it together to do this. I heard it first on a poetry programme on Radio 4 that my partner taped for me.

In fact - I want to order another one because I've already given the other 3 away.... Seriously I do want to order another one.
