8/10 Mike Staff review, 03 July 2012

I’ve not come across Manchester lads Money before but this is sounding very nice to my ears right now. Apparently they’ve been pretty busy over the past year releasing and then swiftly deleting things and putting on live performances/”exhibitions” in unusual locations to building acclaim.

The first side of this single has a piece of ethereal blurry driftpop which is reminding me of Enya and Passion Pit and Antony & the Johnsons all at the same time. There’s something quite spiritual about the carefully extended tones and pure-sounding falsetto vocals. Flip it and there’s more of the same - thoughtful, slow-paced synthetic soul pop that seems to be designed to make people cry. A shrewd move - even if they don’t sell many copies, they just need to make it into one heartbreaking emotional closing montage from a big US TV show and watch the cash money start rolling in. At one point it drops down to just the vocal line, and it sounds like Efrim Menuck singing a Bjork song. Both sides are astonishingly pretty and unusual, actually. Wouldn’t surprise me if we hear this name again.
