- Ghosts Past EP by Shimmering Stars
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 15 June 2012
First and foremost, I was upset to learn of the problems faced by Jason Molina (Songs Ohia/Magnolia Electric Company) which have culminated in a fund being set up in his name to raise money for medical expenses accrued whilst in rehabilitation over the past couple of years (if you ain’t heard the last two Songs Ohia albums ‘Ghostropic’ and ‘Didn’t it Rain - I urge you to do so forthwith) . The makers of this record are donating a percentage of the proceeds of its sale to this fund but even without that incentive to buy its still a great record. Opener ‘Slaves’ is a gorgeous slab of heavily reverbed 50’s influenced chiming pop music recalling the contemporary The Fresh and Only’s but also 50’s romantics like Del Shannon. They have the whole Phil Spector ‘wall of sound’ thing going on - all the tracks are of top notch quality but on the flip they cover Molina’s ‘Hold On, Magnolia’ to devastating effect.
