Two bands, one song, the traditional ballad ‘Gently Johnny’ , two different interpretations. Woodbine and Ivy Band do a Pentangle like wandering folk lament with gospel overtones.Sproatly Smith do a more eerie interpretation with excellent vocals that sound a bit like Greg Lake with a minstrel-ish air and a woman either weeping or achieving orgasm in the middle of it (can’t tell from here). Your enjoyment of this depends on your tolerance for the barrage of re-interpretations of old folk songs (Business Lady has just lost her temper while this is playing and stormed off to the kitchenette). I don’t want to take sides but I really did enjoy the Sproatly Smith version. It sounded like it was recorded in a woodland glade. Limited and lovely.
