8/10 Robin Chamberlain Customer review, 25th February 2014

Following the success of the 1st Gruesome Flowers 7" this follow-up release showcases two more of Captured Tracks roster heavyweights covering songs from 80's Post-Punk cult favourites The Wake. First up is Craft Spells who cover Talk About The Past in an eerily accurate 'cut and paste' rendition of the song. While Justin Vallesteros could be given credit for the precision of this homage (even down to the identical vocals), it's just not what you want from a cover. When two versions of the same song are this similar you're always going to find yourself reaching for the original. As you flip to the other side Blouse's cover of Pale Spectre is in stark contrast to it's neighbour. As the song kick in with huge electronic drums and layered synths it's virtually unrecognisable to the original as Blouse put their own stamp all over what is probably my favourite Wake song, spinning it on it's head. The band have clearly worked hard to make this their own and it shows. I love The Wake and I love both bands on this 7" but if nothing else it's a valuable lesson for other bands in how to, and how not to do covers. I hope Captured Tracks continue this series and can't wait to see what they come up for Gruesome Flowers Pt.3
