9/10 Mike Staff review, 01 May 2012

One of the more interesting among the Record Store Day offcuts we've been thrown this year is this compilation LP from the reliable Sacred Bones imprint. Here we've got a load of unreleased and rare material from 10 of their roster, including the likes of Crystal Stilts, The Men, Amen Dunes, Psychic Ills, Led Er Est and Iceage offshoot War, who open proceedings with a synth-heavy cut which sounds like it owes a great debt to early '80s Cure. The Men's cut on here is the most exciting for me, abandoning their usual grungey noise-pop approach for a slow-burning kraut-psych jam which builds into some explosive riffing towards the end. Would love to hear more like this from them. The demo version of 'Mind Daze' by Psychic Ills as a sweet bit of hazy slacker psych too. The Slug Guts offering is pretty awesome too, unhinged and murky like Dirty Beaches channelling The Birthday Party, and the Crystal Stilts track is a pretty sweet bit of hazy, shimmering indie rock too. Sweet contributions all round really, and an excellent overview of some of the outsider psych weirdness coming from this excellent label right now.
