This has 'hit' written all over it. It's two guys from LA who have teamed up with Danger Mouse. How could it fail? Opener 'Holes' has a little of the Postal Service about it. Nice but slightly dreary. The magic happens on 'This Head I Hold' which is a preposterously upbeat electro soul number with the jauntiest of beats and a melody so catchy it almost rivals 'The Best of Gnarls Barkley'. It's an absolute smash, this track, buzzing along like a particularly exuberant fly. Sounds like it would have been a superb comeback for Amy Winehouse had death not raised its ugly head.
Thankfully with quick pace continues with 'Under the Gun', a neatly produced romp with a superb summer chorus not unlike the falsetto excellence of the best tracks on that Empire of the Sun album but with more than a hint of Stevie Wonder squiggle. What is impressive is that after several tracks, the album hasn't lagged. Each tune has some kind of hook, production touch or general excellence to keep the ear firmly glued to the stereo. It's a very Danger Mouse production, particularly the way the drums are programmed, but this has the whole shebang songwriting/performance wise.
