6/10 Brian Staff review, 10 May 2012
After an afternoon of reviewing largely vibrant sounds, I've finished up with a seven inch by Zulu Winter. I don't know whether to laugh, cry or go outside and aggressively smoke cigarettes whilst glaring at a particularly interesting crack in the pavement. Highly polished '80s-flecked stadium pop that people would actually call an indie single in this day and age. 'Silver Tongued' has a galloping beat, lots of posh spangly synths and a very catchy chorus that'll have fourteen year old girls in breathless knots at their local school disco.
It's not nearly as awful as I first assumed, mainly because the quality of the songwriting itself actually has a bit of an impact (on this occasion) and it's in possession of a nice line in euphoria-inducing dramatics, but long gone are the days I fall for radio friendly hooks and there's been so many of these post-Bloc Party/Hot Chip-style bands over the past few years that I cannot tell one from the other such is the compressed vapid production sheen they subject all their interchangeable hook-laden nuggets with...I'm sure they'll be suitably huge!
