8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 25 April 2012

Will Guthrie is a skilled drummer/percussionist originally from Australia, now living in Nantes, France. He plays in a group called The Ames Room whom I'm unfamiliar with, and has also played alongside the likes of Keith Rowe, Jerome Noetinger, Anthony Pateras and Rhys Chatham so is most likely MAD decent. Guthrie is a pretty intense percussionist and showcases his diverse technique to great effect here on 'Sticks, Stones & Breaking Bones'. Over three extended pieces (entitled 'Sticks', 'Stones' and 'Breaking Bones') he blazes a trail of rhythmic intensity taking in many styles on his journey. 'Sticks' is a an outright assault on the senses heavily influenced by the Ghana beats. It's not hard to imagine the blurring of the sticks when he performs this bad lad. 'Stones' is the obligatory minimalist piece with the sparse arrangement focusing on tonality over agility and speed. Finally 'Breaking Bones' ends the record with a hypnotic tribal affair that is super extended in length. A fantastic collection indeed.
