9/10 Mike Staff review, 25 April 2012

Three Lobed are second to none with their compilating skills - whenever they put out a box set, subscriber series or a collection like this it's a total treat, and the quality and pedigree rarely dips. On this comp they've singled out solo guitarists for attention, with eight big names lining up to show off their own unique personal approach to the versatile and ubiquitous instrument. We've got Alvarius B (Sun City Girls), Steve Gunn, Six Organs of Admittance, Richard Bishop, William Tyler (Lambchop, Silver Jews) and even Lee Ranaldo (duh) offering up their gentle pickings, building up a quietly intimate and yet varied collection of soft (mostly) instrumental passages. The Six Organs offering is a curiously sensual highlight, filling out his rippling fingerpicking with ethereal drones and barely-there vocals to make a spookily soulful piece. Also of note is Steve Gunn's chiming and percussive steel string offering, and the nimble-fingered acoustic chordplay of Ranaldo, replete with breathy fret squeaks, can't be overlooked either. Utterly wonderful stuff all round, and a nice reminder that however far technology moves us forward, there'll always be room for a solitary soul with a guitar.
