8/10 Clinton Staff review, 01 June 2012
So this is the new project from the man who brought you Casiotone For The Painfully Alone and its a beautiful collection of downbeat torch songs which brings mostly to mind Magnetic Fields early lo fidelity downtrodden gems. Full of twinkly pianos, tinny drum machines and, yes, that Casio sound throughout this is no real departure from his previous more obviously monikered outfit. Its all poetic, emotionally charged ballads, quite often in a waltz time signature, ‘Christmas in Oakland’ is particularly affecting even though the vocal sounds uncannily like someone attempting a half hearted Louis Armstrong impression. A record for all emotions, crying, weeping, sobbing, snuffling. Very good though.
