7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 21st February 2015

I have bought two albums by The Walkmen in my lifetime, "Bows & Arrows" - "The Rat" was brilliant, I was quite disappointed with the rest of it though - and "Heaven" after hearing bits and thinking it sounded pretty good. I did take some convincing after "Bows & Arrows" did so much to put me off. This is a neat, considered and beautiful album. “Heartbreaker” and “The Witch” are two great songs and “Southern Heart” is probably quieter than anything they’ve ever done. The unnecessary racket of previous albums has been reined in and they are a much better band for it. It sounds like The Strokes in places, particularly "The Love You Love" and there’s a hint of Vampire Weekend too on "Love Is Luck". They are two bands that I dislike more than like. The Walkmen retain their own identity here too, though. The title track, which is the indie hit of the album, is a refined, but typical slice of The Walkmen at their best.
