9/10 Mike Staff review, 18 April 2012

One of the real treats of the latest haul of tapes from Cam Stallones's very much on-form Sun Ark is this gem of a reissue from crate-diggers' favourite JD Emmanuel, with some of his lovely mystical synthy pieces from way back in 1981. There's six tracks of droney cosmic business and two of “light jazz” which are softly grooving pieces with a great summery washed out lounge kind of feel to them that's reminding me of the Inner Tube LP. Notable not only for the silky skills on display but also how different they are from the rest of Emmanuel's output. The other tracks are far more in his usual vein, though, with gently flowing loops of soft synth and understated, simple melodies brewing up a head-cleansing sense of space which isn't too far removed from Stallones's own Sun Araw spiritual post-dub improvisations - you can certainly tell that he's been an influence. Emmanuel's graceful synth shapes delicately tap into your subconscious and wash you along in translucent waves of pure tone, melting away your tensions with its smooth layers of healing new age synth. Business Lady just piped up that she thinks it “sounds lovely”. I am in agreement. This sounds lovely.
